Read/WriteWeb: Search 2.0 vs Traditional Search

A short piece describing some of the new advances in search tools. Aimed more at those of us who take searching seriously. This is not about to knock Google off its pedestal...yet. I have used Clusty to search PubMed/Medline and have been very impressed. I think it will be worth checking out these other approaches.

Some chefs search the world for the perfect ingredients or the perfect meal but me as a Librarian I am always looking for the perfect search engine. What have I discovered so far? No search engine is perfect but some are definitely better than others. I thought I would share with the NOSMeLD blog a few search engines that I am experimenting with right now.

1.Vivisimo http://vivisimo.com/
2.Technorati http://www.technorati.com/
3.BASE http://base.ub.uni-bielefeld.de/index_english.html

Vivisimo is another clustering searching engine. I do think the preference of a clustering searching engine is something that is personal. I like how the clustering sorts the results which can be part of the battle using internet search engines.

I am currently interested by search engines where a user can find academic resources in an open access environment. I have been using BASE lately and testing it out. I am amazed at how many resources I can find there. If you go to the BASE homepage, note that you will have to scroll down to “Start a search”.

I've used Technorati and Vivisimo before. I particularly like Clusty from vivisimo for its clustered search of PubMed. About the only thing that i don't like about it is that they keep moving it.

Technorati is also very good.

I just took a look at BASE. Seems very focused. Will try it out some more.
